Loewenburg (Lion‘s Castle) was first mentioned 1247 and was used as a border fortress by the Dukes of Sayn to survey the castles Drachenfels (Dragon’s Rock) and Wolkenburg ( Cloud Castle) in close proximity. Later the castle belonged to the Lords of Sponheim-Heinsberg, who then called themselves Lords of Loewenburg since 1269. It was left alone sometime in the 1700s and fell into a ruin in the following centuries.
